Opera 11.10 includes improved power saving features

Just recently, the Opera 11.10 release candidate was made available for download. It brought a handful of important feature additions -- like HTML5 File API support and IMAP enhancements -- and loads of bugfixes. Nestled in amongst the other details in the Opera team's announcement is one more interesting tidbit: Opera 11.10 offers improved battery optimizations.

The timing here is certainly interesting, what with Microsoft's recent report on how much power the top five Web browsers consume. In its findings, Opera 11 was fairly low in the standings. While we've not seen any new benchmarks yet, we're curious to know whether the Opera 11.10 RC offers any significant gains.

If you're running Opera 11.10 on a laptop, let us know if you're seeing an improvement in your battery life while browsing!

Gorgeous Stainless Steel Ventu Combines Colander and Serving Bowl

The Ventu looks great, like a stainless-steel Armadillo. It also looks really hard to clean

Quirky ? It?s not just a design-by-community site which makes plastic widgets that take almost a year to actually manufacture. It?s also a place where you can find innovative and complex kitchenware.

Today?s product is the lovely-looking Ventu, a combination colander and serving bowl. The stainless steel receptacle is perforated, just like any other strainer, but it also has another bowl below the holes which keeps the one above shut tight. Push down on one of the acacia-wood handles and this section moves away, letting liquids escape.

It is clever, looks gorgeous, and makes meal prep easy: you can drain pasta and sauce it in the same bowl, for example. It also introduces needless complexity.

First, the big sell is convenience. This is true, right up until you wash it, when you will be faced with nooks and crannies into which sauced has seeped. And don?t even think of putting this into the dishwasher, unless you want to shrivel and spoil those wooden handles.

Still, there?s no denying that this would look great in your kitchen, or your dining table, and it costs a very reasonable $55. If you want one, and are prepared to wait a while, then head over and pledge your cash to the cause.

Windows 8 to feature adaptive Aero colorization, get it now on Windows 7

While we've still yet to see anything truly Earth-shattering, the tandem of Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott continues to churn out insight about interesting new features they've discovered in Windows 8 milestone 3. The latest discovery is that Aero in Windows 8 will be able to automatically adapt itself to match your current wallpaper image. It's a bit like what Windows 7 already does with your taskbar icons: if a program alert needs your attention, the icon will glow using the predominant color (e.g. Firefox should glow orange).

And yes, you can already make Windows 7 behave this way if you like. Over at CodePlex, there's a little program called Aura that parks itself in your system tray and automatically adjusts your window borders to compliment your wallpaper images. The effect is quite nice, and you can try it out by minimizing your windows and cycling through your theme's wallpapers (right click on your desktop and choose next desktop background).

Hello Expense is a simple, reliable expense tracker for Android

A good mobile application is a fine balance between simplicity and functionality. You're using it on the go, so you don't have a lot of time to sit there and fumble with the phone to figure it all out. But you also need it to be powerful enough to let you do whatever it is you're trying to get done.

Hello Expense is one mobile app that gets it right. It's an expense tracker that lets you use your Android-powered phone to quickly log the money you spend and then analyze it and see where it all went.

I recently had the chance to use it in a real-life situation ? a road trip that took a few days and involved quite a few expenses. Logging each expense took seconds, and at the end of each day I could get a great overview of how much money I spent on each category so far.

Categories and tags are user-configurable; the app also sports its own number pad to make number entry easy, regardless of what keyboard you're using.

Razer, Intel And Tencent Form Alliance In China

? Heard of Tencent? Okay, two out of three isn't bad, but all three are vital in the formation of a new strategic partnership that's bringing together a key gaming lab in China. Today, the companies announced that Intel and Razer (two key companies in the formation of the Switchblade) would be working with encent, China?s leading provider of games and internet services, to launch a new "strategic partnership" in China.

China might seem like an odd place to launch the Switchblade, but Lenovo has done just that for years and managed to succeed quite well. Razer already has a strong presence in Asia, and this will only make it stronger. At this time, it's hard to really imagine how these three will be working together in any serious way, but it's obvious that something's brewing in China. Will this nation become the launching pad for all of Razer's future products? Who knows, but there's definitely a huge testbed there now for lots of R&D work.

RAZER, TENCENT, AND INTEL FORM A STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP FOR PC GAMING IN CHINA

Three of the largest technology brands in China to optimize games for mobile play on the Razer Switchblade

Beijing, China ? April 13th, 2011 ? Razer, the world?s leading high-end precision gaming brand, with Tencent, China?s leading provider of games and internet services, and Intel, world leader in computing innovation are proud to announce a strategic partnership aimed at expanding the entertainment possibilities for Chinese gamers. The Razer Switchblade concept has been designated as the flagship concept to lead this mobile PC gaming revolution.

All Chinese gamers can rejoice, as their favorite Tencent titles like Dungeon and Fighter, Crossfire, League of Legends, QQ Speed and many more are optimized for portable play on the Razer Switchblade. You can now fight, shoot, cast spells, race or just socialize with friends while on-the-go, as Tencent strives to ensure their software delivers the best gaming experience through perfect synergy with Razer and Intel?s hardware.

?This is the first time three of the biggest technology brands in China have come together,? said Min-Liang Tan, CEO and Creative Director, Razer, ?we?re united by a common goal to deliver the best portable gaming experience to as many gamers as possible. With the Razer Switchblade?s adaptive tactile keyboard, Intel?s range of processors, and Tencent?s popular games, this is no lofty goal ? it?s happening right now.?

The Razer Switchblade concept was created from the ground up by Razer designers and engineers, focused on enhancing the entire user experience of playing PC games on a handheld device. It features an ultra-sensitive multi-touch screen, adaptive tactile keyboard, and an intelligent user interface that adjusts the configuration and key layout on-the-fly based on game content and user requirements. And at the heart of the concept device is an Intel Atom processor designed for next generation small form factor computing.

"Intel is committed to creating and extending the personal computing experience for end-users together with our ecosystem partners," said Ian Yang, President, Intel China. "The collaboration with Razer, Tencent and Intel will provide optimized experiences for the rapidly growing gaming community in China."

?Like Razer, we want gamers to have just as much fun playing our games on-the-go as they would at home or at a PC caf,? said Mark Ren, SEVP, Tencent. ?We?re really excited to bring the revolutionary Razer Switchblade to millions gamers connected to our games, allowing them to experience our world of fun anytime, anywhere?, said Steven Ma, VP of Tencent.

Razer, Intel, and Tencent are committed to growing China?s PC gaming market, and will be announcing exciting updates to this strategic partnership in the months to come.

GNOME 3 released, ushers in an interesting amalgam of iOS and OS X

GNOME 3, after more than two years of development, has been released into the wild. GNOME 3 is not merely the logical successor of GNOME 2: it is an entirely new project, started from scratch, to create a "completely new, modern desktop designed for today's users and technologies."

The best way to check out GNOME 3's new features -- and it has lots of new features -- is to run a live version of openSUSE or Fedora, or simply head over to the GNOME 3 website and watch the (rather pretty) introductory videos. If you want a synopsis, though, here it is: GNOME 3 looks a lot like Mac OS X, with a healthy dollop of iOSesqueness for good measure, but yet it still somehow retains an underlying feel of Linux.

The overall aesthetic is very simple, very elegant, and despite being slightly out of fashion, there are plenty of rounded corners, too. The main addition, workflow-wise, is the addition of an app-launcher-cum-alt-tab screen, where you can launch apps, or flip through your open windows. For a complete list of the new features and changes, check the GNOME 3 release notes.

Despite GNOME 3 being officially launched, there aren't actually any releases for existing, stable Linux distros -- it's the live CD/USB images, or Ubuntu users will have to wait for the launch of 11.04 for a GNOME 3 PPA, but it will break Unity in the process. Fedora users will have to wait for for the May 24 release of Fedora 15. Of course, if you're feeling crazy, you can always build GNOME 3 from source.

Premium Design and Materials

Tapping into HTC?s trademark design language, the HTC Sensation 4G?s premium look and feel is enhanced by its rounded edges and aluminum unibody construction, and the touch screen surface is protected by a contoured screen that feels more natural as a finger glides across it. The 4.3-inch qHD display delivers high-resolution widescreen viewing and gives the HTC Sensation 4G slender proportions that feel natural in a person?s hand. For instance, the camera can be launched right from the lock screen with a single motion, saving precious seconds when you?re trying to capture the action. Sharper graphics, vibrant animations and new widgets make HTC Sense look better than ever and, by continuing to focus on all of the aspects, both large and small, that make HTC Sense special, HTC introduces a more cinematic and immersive weather experience with stunning imagery and audible weather effects.

HTC Sense also makes it easy to have fun by enabling people to capture and share special moments. The HTC Sensation 4G?s 8-megapixel camera doesn?t just shoot gorgeous photos ? with the new instant capture feature, it lets people capture the moments they want without worrying about missing or keeping up with the action. The 4.3-inch widescreen display means that users can watch movies like they were meant to be seen ? in their full cinematic glory, with no cropping or letterboxing. The HTC Sensation 4G is also the first smartphone to feature HTC Watch ? an application and service that puts an entire library of the latest, premium movies and TV shows right at your fingertips, letting people discover the latest video content in an easy and visually engaging way. HTC Watch uses progressive download technology that makes it possible to watch videos without waiting for a huge file to finish downloading. Four Grammy Awards renamed to include 'video games music,' underline its growing importance

THE RECORDING ACADEMY CONTINUES EVOLUTION OF GRAMMY AWARDS PROCESS

Restructuring of Categories Across All Genres Brings Total Number of Categories to be Recognized at the 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards in 2012 to 78; All Fields Remain Intact
Minimum Number of Entries Per Category Will Now Be 40, Up from 25

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (April 06, 2011) - In an effort to continuously evolve its GRAMMY Awards process, The Recording Academy (www.grammy.com) announced today that it has restructured the GRAMMY Categories across all genres and Fields, bringing the total number of Categories to be recognized at the 54th GRAMMY Awards in 2012, to 78 (from 109). All Fields remain the same. The announcement was made this morning at The Academy's headquarters by President/CEO Neil Portnow, Academy Board Chair Emeritus and five-time GRAMMY winner Jimmy Jam, and Vice President of Awards Bill Freimuth. Additionally, a minimum of 40 distinct artist entries will be required in each Category (up from 25). Detailed information on these and other recent changes may be found at www.grammy.com/announcement. For updates and breaking news, please visit The Academy's social networks on Twitter and Facebook: www.twitter.com/thegrammys, www.facebook.com/thegrammys.

"Every year, we diligently examine our Awards structure to develop an overall guiding vision and ensure that it remains a balanced and viable process," said Portnow. "After careful and extensive review and analysis of all Categories and Fields, it was objectively determined that our GRAMMY Categories be restructured to the continued competition and prestige of the highest and only peer-recognized award in music. Our Board of Trustees continues to demonstrate its dedication to keeping The Recording Academy a pertinent and responsive organization in our dynamic music community."

For 53 years, The Recording Academy has recognized musical excellence with the GRAMMY Awards - the most prestigious and only peer-recognized award in music - and the awards have grown from 28 Categories in 1959, to awards in 109 Categories for the most recent 53rd GRAMMYs. This growth springs from a tradition of honoring specific genres and/or subgenres within a Field, and it has basically been approached one Category at a time without a current overall guiding vision and without consistency across the various genre Fields. In 2009, The Academy initiated a first-ever comprehensive evaluation of its Awards process, which led to a desire for change. A transformation of the entire Awards structure would ensure that all Fields would be treated with parity. Diligent research, careful analysis, and thoughtful discussion of all Fields resulted in an overarching framework and a restructuring of Categories to 78, and ensures that every submission continues to have a home.

In addition to the restructuring of Categories, two rule changes have been established and four Fields have been renamed. It is now expected that each Category shall have at least 40 distinct artist entries, up from 25. If a Category receives between 25 ? 39 entries, only three recordings would receive nominations that year. Should there be fewer than 25 entries in a Category, that Category would immediately go on hiatus for the current year - no award given - and entries would be screened into the next most logical Category. If a Category receives fewer than 25 entries for three consecutive years, the Category would be discontinued, and submissions would be entered in the next most appropriate Category.

The second rule change is regarding voting. Previously, voting members were allowed to vote in up to nine genre Fields plus the General Field on the first ballot and eight genre Fields plus the General Field on the second ballot, including every category within each chosen Field. Now, on each ballot, voters may vote in up to 20 Categories in the genre Fields plus the four Categories of the General Field - which includes Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year, and Best New Artist.

Additionally, there are name changes to four Fields: Musical Show is now Musical Theater; the Film/ Television/Other Visual Media Field is now called Music For Visual Media; the Gospel Field has been renamed the Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music Field; and the Dance Field has been renamed the Dance/Electronica Field.

The Awards restructuring proposal was presented by The Recording Academy's Awards & Nominations (A&N) Committee - comprised of elected Academy leaders from across the country representing various genres of the music community - and was voted on and passed by The Academy's Board of Trustees - made up of musicians, producers, engineers, songwriters, and other music professionals. The A&N Committee spent more than a year reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating the GRAMMY Awards process and Categories with great objectivity and fair-mindedness, before presenting its recommendations to the Board of Trustees for ratification. While at times incredibly challenging for each member of the committee to restructure Categories in their own respective genres, the greater purpose of promoting unity within the music community and ensuring that all Fields be treated with parity outweighed natural inclinations to resist change.

Nvidia to stop supporting the Harmony platform past Froyo

Nvidia Harmony

The Nvidia corporation will drop Android support for its devices running on the Harmony platform, according to a post on its official developer forums by Andrew Edelsten, Tegra Developer Relations. This means that devices using the Harmony platform at their core -- the Viewsonic gTablet and ViewPad7, Advent Vega, Toshiba Folio 100, and Notion Ink Adam -- will not have drivers built for video acceleration for any current or future releases of Android.

This is not good news. None of these Tegra 2-based devices is even a year old, and they are essentially dead in the water. Even if someone were to build a higher version of Android for them, with no hardware support it's going to be a horrible experience. Don't believe me? Try an SDKport of Honeycomb on, well, on anything.

I got myself a third cup of coffee, and sat down all ready to bash Nvidia for abandoning support for very capable devices, then I realized something -- I can't. These popular devices are just the first official victims of Google's new method of forcing companies to obtain its blessing to use a free and open-source operating system. It's not Nvidia's fault. You can't be expected to spend money and resources to update drivers for tablets that will never have official support from Google. Andrew says that they have already updated their Ventana based devices to Android 2.3, and are waiting for Google to release Honeycomb to them. I'm afraid we're going to see the exact same thing with the original Galaxy Tab, and it won't be Samsung's fault this time. The phrase "throwing the baby out with the bathwater" comes to mind. [Nvidia Developer Zone] Thanks, Adam!

Tevatron Experiment Could Send Particle Physicists Back to the Drawing Board

If the existence of a previously unknown particle is confirmed, it would be the first particle that does not fit into the standard model of particle physics, said UC Riverside physics and astronomy professor John Ellison. The standard model of particle physics is a theory of three of the four known fundamental interactions and the elementary particles that take part in these interactions. These particles make up all visible matter in the universe.

Experiments conducted at the Tevatron particle accelerator at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois seem to indicate that a new particle has been found.

A paper posted on the laboratory's website Monday brought out this point.

Stripped of the scientific terminology ("the invariant mass distribution of jet pairs produced in association with a W boson using data collected with the CDF detector which correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.3 fb....), it says there's a bump in mass.

That could point to a new particle, possibly a non-standard boson.

If a new particle has indeed been discovered, it would mean that most of our ideas about what is beyond the standard model of elementary particle physics are wrong, Lawrence M. Krauss, foundation professor at Arizona State University's School of Earth and Space Exploration, told TechNewsWorld.

The discovery "would be a very fundamental discovery in particle physics," said John Ellison, professor and vice chair of the department of physics and astronomy at the University of California Riverside.

Fermi Labs did not respond to TechNewsWorld's request for comment by press time.

Things That Go Bump in the Tevatron

The experiment consisted of banging together a proton and an anti-proton at about 2 TeV of energy, according to a blog post by Flip Tanedo on the USLHC website. USLHC consists of U.S. scientists participating in the CERN Large Hadron Collider experiment.

One TeV is the amount of kinetic energy a flying mosquito produces, so we're looking at the Small Bang here.

The collision gave off energy particles and excess mass. Apparently, the excess mass is not described by current theoretical predictions within the statistical and systematic uncertainties, according to the paper posted on Fermi Labs' website.

After plotting the data, a second bump was found that peaks around 150 GeV, Tanedo wrote.

One GeV is a billion electron volts. In physics, an electron volt is the amount of kinetic energy gained by a single unbound electron when it accelerates through an electric potential difference of one volt. The electron volt is not an SI unit, and its value must be obtained experimentally. It's commonly used with SI prefixes such as "G" for giga.

Deviations and Inferences Therefrom

The second bump has a statistical significance of 3.2 standard deviations, which means the probability that it's from a standard background process is very small, UC Riverside's Ellison told TechNewsWorld.

In statistics, there's a rule stating that for a normal distribution, nearly all values lie within three standard deviations of the mean. Just over 68 percent of the values lie within one standard deviation of the mean; about 95.4 percent lie within two standard deviations; and about 99.73 percent lie within three standard deviations.

This is called the "68-95-99 rule," the "three-sigma rule," or the "empirical rule."

However, that's not enough to certify that the bump is a new particle.

"To claim discovery of a new particle, five standard deviations is usually required," Ellison explained.

This certification could come "very soon," as the D0 Experiment, a worldwide collaboration of scientists conducting research on the fundamental nature of matter, can look for the same effect, Ellison suggested.

Ellison is a member of the D0 (D-Zero) Collaboration and also a member of the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider.

Getting More Data

The CERN LHC will provide definitive data about this bump in the coming year or so, Arizona State's Krauss said.

"There is not enough data now to claim a definitive discovery," Krauss added. "The claimed bump doesn't fall into the category of any predicted particles, so it cannot be easily classified."

One possibility, if the discovery is confirmed as a new particle, is that it could be a new boson like the Z-boson but heavier, UC Riverside's Ellison suggested.

If the discovery is indeed confirmed, this would be the first particle that does not fit into the standard model of particle physics, Ellison pointed out.

The standard model of particle physics is a theory of three of the four known fundamental interactions and the elementary particles that take part in these interactions. These particles -- quarks, leptons and gauge bosons -- make up all visible matter in the universe.

What Is a Tevatron?

The Tevatron is the second highest energy particle collider in the world after the CERN HLC.

It accelerates protons and antiprotons in a ring 3.9 miles long.

The Tevatron will be shut down in September, as it has been made obsolete by the CERN HLC, although some U.S. scientists are opposed to this.

Hisense And AMIMON Team Up On WHDI Wireless Streaming Accessories

Wirelessly streaming HD has been possible for years now, but until recently, most devices that accomplish that goal required a hefty down payment. Those solutions weren't for the everyman, and instead catered to homeowners with loads to spend on a wire-free home theater. But these days, things are different. Technology has evolved to a point where wireless HD transmissions are more mainstream than ever before, and one company has been there since the beginning:

.

That company is responsible for WHDI, a transmission protocol that enables wireless high-def transfers to take place. The company is teaming up with Hisense to introduce hree new accessories based on WHDI standard so that users can wirelessly connect HD sources such as their laptop of iPhone to their television in their living room.

The WHDI Transmitter Stick, WHDI Receiver and WHDI case for iPhone are all new this week, and all are being unveiled to the public for the first time at the Global Sources Electronics & Components World Expo, today through Friday at the AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong. No pricing information is available, but this could definitely be the start of a trend we're in favor of. The fewer wires, the better!

Android OS Hack Gives Virtual Early Upgrade

The latest CyanogenMod release (7.0) is based on Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread).

Android phone owners stuck on older versions of the operating system know the frustration of seeing newer versions with features they can?t get.

Good news for them: A new, hacked version of Android delivers many of the features of the latest Android OS without the wait.

The gang over at CyanogenMod dropped a new stable release of their popular Android OS ROM, CyanogenMod version 7.0.

In the hacking community, a custom ROM (which stands for ?read-only memory?) has come to refer to a image of the operating system that comes on your phone when you buy it, aka a stock ROM. Customized ROMs are exactly that ? tweaked versions of an OS that are manipulated, often containing firmware upgrades that come out faster than official updates from the makers of the OS.

After gaining root access to your phone, you can run the custom ROM on your phone using an app like ROM Manager.

The new release functions on more than 30 devices, now including two tablets ? the Barnes and Noble Nook Color and the G-Tablet.

Version 7.0 is available free for download at the CyanogenMod website.

Installing CyanogenMod 7 brings major updates to the keyboard and texting tools, reducing problems with selecting text for copying and pasting that frustrated users in previous versions of Android. The reports on battery use by app are much more detailed in the settings menu compared to Froyo. A number of minor updates include a list of all the apps you?ve downloaded on your phone, as well an update to the camera app that makes it easy to switch between front- and back-facing cameras.

Along with access to Gingerbread?s finest features, CyanogenMod 7.0 comes with a number of cool perks, including built-in CPU clocking (over or under), the ability to install more apps to your phone?s SD card, custom wallpapers and themes, and some tweaks to the music-playing app that allows you to use the camera button to pause.

Some of the different features in the update aren?t grandiose in nature, but the new CyanogenMod release highlights what Android enthusiasts love about the platform ? the ability to customize a phone through subtle tweaks and flourishes, making what would otherwise be one of many manufactured handsets into a personalized (or hacked) device.

Have you downloaded and tested the new CyanogenMod 7.0? Let us know what it?s like in the comments.

Apple set to absorb price increases caused by Japan?s continuing power problems?

iPad 2 tear down

Japan?s continuing problems with power are having a serious affect on manufacturers of components used in many of Apple?s products. The power constraints are causing upstream components to increase in price. According to DigiTimes, Apple has decided to absorb these additional costs in exchange for smooth shipments.

The DigiTimes source also pointed out that the iPad 2?s monthly shipments are expected to be ramped up to four million units in the second quarter of this year. Apple?s Japanese based upstream component suppliers should be able to meet these demands up until May; from June there may be a problem.

Microsoft releases sexy Bing app for iPad

It's still a bit odd seeing Microsoft deliver apps for Apple's mobile platform. And it's even stranger still to see one as sexy as the new Bing app for iPad, which brings a slick, immersive search experience to Apple's tablet.

Just as a regular search on bing.com will, the Bing app for iPad tailors the results it displays based on what you're searching for. There are loads of custom views, covering everything from movies and maps to weather and shopping. The app also offers a heads-up display of currently trending searches, complete with related images, which is an iPad-exclusive feature.

Navigation is a breeze thanks to multitouch controls, allowing users to flick or swipe through results. And while the development team refers to the app as "touch and decide," Bing Voice Search is also built in -- making it easy to start a query without using the iPad's on-screen keyboard.

The Bing app for iPad is available for download now from the App Store.

Magic Bar Adds Wireless Charging to Magic Trackpad, Keyboard

Mobee's Magic Bar charges Apple's keyboard and trackpad, wirelessly

The biggest failing of Apple?s Bluetooth trackpad and keyboards is that they aren?t rechargeable. Instead, you have to keep them fed with a constant diet of AA cells. Low-discharge rechargeables do the trick, but if you have any regular NiMH cells around, they tend not to last so well for such low drainage purposes.

I also use a Magic Trackpad on either side of an aluminum Bluetooth keyboard, which means I get through the alkalines at a fair clip.

Enter the Magic Bar (of course) from Mobee. It?s a wireless charger for your Apple keyboard or Magic Trackpad. The Magic Bar comes in two parts. First is a double-AA sized battery pack, and second is the dock cradle. The cradle connects to the computer or other power source via USB, and has a channel into which the cylindrical rear section of your chosen input device snugly fits for charging.

It sounds ideal.

Then we take a closer look at the specs. A pair of regular AAs will last you for months. The battery pack that comes with the Magic Bar gives just ten days of live on a six-hour charge, thanks ? presumably ? to a reduction in battery size to accommodate the charging circuitry. This is the same problem as befalls Mobee?s other product, a charger for the Magic Mouse.

The Magic Bar will be available to order on May 15th. The price is still unannounced, but as a guide the Magic Mouse version ? which is a lot smaller ? costs ?50, or $72.

Adblock Plus developer pokes holes in Mozilla's new add-on performance tests

Wladimir Palant, developer of the most popular add-on in the world, Adblock Plus, is also an active contributor to the Planet Mozilla blog community. Over the last few days, in response to Mozilla's new name and shame list of slow add-ons, Palant has been investigating whether Mozilla's testing methods are actually accurate.

Rather surprisingly, it turns out that Mozilla's numbers could be significantly wrong -- and if they're not wrong, the factors that Mozilla uses to tabulate an add-ons final score should definitely be made more transparent.

In the first set of tests, Palant shows that FlashGot's position in the top 10 is probably due to a fault in Mozilla's testing setup, and that add-ons can perform very differently depending on which operating system they're being tested on. In the second analysis, Palant uncovers an irregularity that doesn't seem to have an obvious cause -- but it could be due to an I/O bottleneck on Mozilla's test machines. Basically, even though performance testing of Read It Later is disabled because of a bug, it still (somehow!) manages to record a 14% slow-down on Windows 7.

Palant concludes both analyses by scolding Mozilla for going public with the performance data before its testing methods had been confirmed accurate. It definitely looks like Mozilla has been more than a little reckless, considering the importance of Firefox's add-on ecosystem.
